Years ago, our state was considering whether to repeal a helmet requirement for motorcyclists. I was asked to write a white paper for the Governor's legislative office estimating the safety effects of the law and a repeal.

The math is relatively straightforward. Our best estimate of helmet effectiveness in preventing fatalities is this; these are the helmet usage rates in states with and without requirements, before and after a repeal (mean, median, range); these are our current motorcyclist numbers. Multiply through, and the bottom line estimate was "+20 motorcyclist deaths per year."

I don't know how much that contributed to the debate, but we kept the helmet law. A few years later, I was in a different job and we had a different Governor, and the repeal went through.

Motorcyclist deaths increased by exactly 20 that year.

On a human level, every death is a tragedy that can never be repaired. On a professional level? Fucking nailed it

I would wear one OFF the motorcycle. I would pay ACTUAL MONEY to have my head permanently transmogrified into a motorcycle helmet.
